SUMMARY:Cruit Island – Island in the Sun (We Keep Coming Back and So Should You)
DESCRIPTION:Cruit Island is one of those places that gets under your skin. Wave-washed granite\, sea cliffs\, boulders\, the odd seal judging you from below — and routes for everyone from absolute beginner to seasoned trad climber. Yes\, it can take five hours from Dublin. Yes\, it is absolutely worth it. \nAccess is via a bridge (no boats\, no swimming with your rack)\, and if you’re very lucky you might spot Iain Miller — who wrote the guidebook — actually out on the rock. The man is practically part of the geology at this point. Download his guide before you go. \nWith 9 or 10 crags to choose from\, there’s genuinely something for every level. Complete beginners can get their eye in at the outdoor climbing wall or on the Minor Tridents. Those looking for their first trad lead will find plenty of friendly routes to build confidence on. And for those further up the grades\, the likes of Best Poss Taste\, Safe & Sound\, and the iconic Cruit Crack are waiting. Some people even venture around the corner to One Move Wonder and discover there are\, in fact\, multiple ways to deal with the one move. \nThe tides run the show\, so keep an eye on them — but that just means you rotate around the crags as the day goes on\, which keeps things interesting. \nCamping is right at the crags\, right on the beach\, with the landowner’s blessing. No facilities\, no running water\, just location\, location\, location — and if previous trips are anything to go by\, marshmallows over a BBQ under a van awning while a storm rolls in. LNT principles apply. Camping location here. \nNot a camper? No problem: \n\nCarey’s Viking House Hotel — right where the Cruit road meets the coast road. Pauline does group rates. Call (074) 954 3295.\nCruit Thatched Cottages — contact Donal Ó Murchú on 087-236 4963. Likely rented Saturday to Saturday so plan ahead.\nTwo bed en-suite cottage — Brian McGonagle (086 8480763) has a place ¼ mile from the Viking House Hotel\, five minutes from the climbing.\nCaisleáin Óir\, Annagry — about 5 miles east. The food is genuinely superb.\n\nThe nearest pub and food on the island is the golf course — a 20-30 minute walk from camp. Just long enough to justify a second pint. \nPrevious attendees have described the weekend as everything from “amazing” to the kind of trip where you lead something you swore you wouldn’t\, halfway up it\, and somehow it all works out. First-timers\, nervous leaders\, seasoned climbers — everyone leaves happy. \nCome. The rock is sticky and the craic is mighty.

SUMMARY:Climbfest 2025 - Malinbeg
DESCRIPTION:Colmcille Climbers – see website below – are holding the annual Climbfest this year at Malinbeg\, Co. Donegal. \nNO NEED TO BOOK this year.  Just turn up and pay. \nThe charge is 20 euro.  Entry includes for a copy of the Ulster 100 Classics guide which Colmcille have just submitted for printing. \nCAMPING is at the usual site by Malinbeg harbour\, at https://maps.app.goo.gl/kmp3kHe4meLdUZm58?g_st=iw\, within a couple of minutes walk from the crags\, and there are portaloos hired for the weekend.  There is also water on tap at the pier.  So not quite as “wild” as maybe first thought.  There is a large car park for vanners at Silver Strand\, and there is also stated to be hostels at Malinbeg\, Malinmore and Glencolmcille.  I have checked things out.  Malinbeg seems booked out.  Aras Ghleann Colm Cille is open and available\, it is best to book directly with them\, and I’ve published details of “how” in my reply below.  As the weather MayDay is looking as good as Easter looked bleak (check the MetÉ 10 day sea chart)\, anyone wanting a bed should not delay a HOSTEL BOOKING. \nThe area is said not to be as suitable for ‘Bottom roping’ as other places such as Culdaff\, but fixed ropes will be installed at Neptunes Wall and probably Skelpoonagh (about 15 minutes drive from the campsite). There are a variety of other crags accessible within easy driving distance\, Muckross Head\, Sail Rock\, and at An Port\, Berg Wall and the aptly named ‘End of the Earth’ crag. \nClimbfest has been running at various venues throughout Donegal since 2005. This is the 20th\, and as usual\, it’s aimed primarily at the ‘not so serious’ climber\, beginner\, or indoor climber. Colmcille Climbers are hoping that it will be kindly supported by Mountaineering Ireland. \nMeet registration fee €20 includes for a copy of a book of 100 Ulster Classic climbs that Colmcille Climbers are just now publishing\, otherwise costing 18.00 euro (as do extra copies).  As I understand it\, it’s full colour and route descriptions\, with historical or other anecdotes. \nIf anyone reading this but not going to the meet sends me 18.00 by Revolut to address below\, I will deliver a copy to Awesome within a week or so.  Revolut – @david5czr \nAny updates will be posted on the website – https://colmcille-climbers.com/event/glencolmcille-climbfest/
