Thursday Evening#2 28th April 5.00pm New Members: Introductory Evening#2 Awesome Walls (Change of venue)
Have to say the weather gods have conspired against us (lashing down as I type this)
We have rain forecast between 6-8pm http://www.yr.no/place/Ireland/Leinster/Dalkey_Hill/hour_by_hour_detailed.html in dalkey this evening.
This combined with the temp and wind would climbing less than pleasurable
I had planned to spend time on Stance/Rope management (how to avoid rope spaghetti) on multi-pitch climbing , and then get some more rock climbs in ,but that can wait another week (or this weekend)
So I am moving the training indoors today to Awesome Walls
Gives us a chance to focus on definitely the most important element of your climbing if you want to improve your grades.. footwork
Tonight rather than just jumping on the ropes having fun , I would like to see people take an approach
As you are spending 15 minutes , going through your warm up , rotating all those joints , particularly ones that feel stiff , neck, shoulders, wrists
Want you to banish all those thoughts about your problems at work, bad traffic, etc and think about the reason you are here , to climb the best climb of your life
Before you put your foot on that first hold,
• Relax your body look at that first foothold,
• see exactly where the best place is to put your foot,
• Use the correct part of your foot, inside big toe , so that it can pivot
• If it’s an edge keep your ankle high, if it’s a smear drop your ankle to maximum runner onto the hold
• watch your foot as you place it ,
• foot making no sound ,
• Then weight it moving your centre of gravity over the foot
Would you do that for me? Simple application of good footwork will jump you a grade in your climbing I promise.
Im going into AW to setup some problems that will require good footwork
I would be very happy if you try these before you burst onto the lead walls
I will also (had two requests ) work with people who missed last Tuesday on setting up anchors , just with a rope , and just with slings and the setup belay for the 2nd climber, etc (won’t be with natural anchors )
There may also be 10 new MI membership cards for people being delivered today to AW , so if you haven’t got one , approach myself or Hugh/Cillian
Also I am missing a silver friend 1.5 CAM (red tape) from last Tuesday , so if you do find it on your harness I would appreciate its return
Many thanks and sorry for the rain
Regards Jon (IMC training officer)
