Resources For Women in the Outdoors

Resources For Women in the Outdoors

The IMC has a long tradition of being inclusive of women since its founding in 1948. We want to continue to support the women of our club in the ways available to us. In the last few years there have been great strides made by the sporting communities in Ireland to make activities more inclusive and accessible to women. Below you will find links for resources, events and training that are there to help support women’s differing needs and facilitate a thriving recreational life in the mountains and our club.

Outdoor Training Resources:

There are many great courses on offer all over the country and abroad. Our Training Officer may be organising courses at a reduced rate throughout the year, so please contact them if there are specific courses you would be interested in. Alternatively, you can look for course providers yourself. There is a list of course providers on the Mountaineering Ireland website. Members can claim 20 to 30 percent back on applicable training courses that meet club criteria.

Mountaineering Ireland have set aside particular funding for Women in Sport. The next round of funding will be for 2025 through 2026. Should you have a particular project in mind, professional or leadership development development it is worth contacting the Training Officer or Women in Sport lead as they may be able to offer further assistance with the costs.

OutdoorHer Resource Hub

BMC and Mountain Training have joined the movement towards systemic change for women in sport by launching OutdoorHer – a hub of advice and guidance for managing female bodies while hill walking or climbing outdoors.

Inspired by conversations with women who walk, climb and lead others about managing their periods and the menopause when out in the wild, BMC and Mountain Training have created some simple ‘how to’ guides about toileting, periods, menopause and kit.

Women and girls belong in the outdoors and the aim of the hub is to remove the awkwardness of not knowing what to do so people know how to manage themselves or support others.

Our hope is that this new hub can help women, girls and leaders of all genders enjoy their adventures, be themselves and support those around them.”
